Unlike a mall or typical business district, shopping and dining on Brady
Street is an experience that is richly enhanced by a clear sense that you
are in a neighborhood. The bells of St. Hedwig's Church chime on the hour,
the firefighters from Ladder Co. 6 hand out biscuits to the many dogs
passing by and children can be heard laughing and playing at the Tamarack
Elementary School.
Many of the businesses are owned and operated by people who live within
blocks, and everyone seems to know everyone. In the summertime, tables and
chairs line the sidewalks so you can have a drink or a meal without missing
a moment of peoplewatching.
New pedestrian bridges now make getting here a breeze. The Marsupial Bridge
under the Holton Street viaduct connects the west end of Brady Street to
Commerce Street as well as the old Brewer's Hill and New Beer Line B
neighborhoods. On the east end, the new Brady Street Bridge is perfect for
a quick and safe bikeride, walk or skate to the lakeshore and back.
